Status of Parents in the Light of Islam

The rights of father and mother are the most supreme in the view of Islam, after rights of Allah Almighty. In its list of priorities, the revealed book of Islam, the Holy Quran, places the responsibilities towards parents only next to obligations towards Allah Almighty. The Holy Quran orders upon its followers to be obedient and kind toward their father and mother. If they achieve old age and are with you, you must not say them even a word of fie i.e. minor derogation what to speak of misbehaving or repulsing with them. You must be very much obedient and submissive in talking to them and at all times pray for Allah’s mercy and compassion on them. You must obey their instructions, care for their relaxations and must not be rude, arrogant, or rebellious to them.

According to a meaning of one Hadith, your parents are your Hell and your Paradise, which means that by your good behavior to them you can get Heaven while your misbehavior and disobedience with them would make you accountable for Hell. According to another Hadith, a person is very unlucky who has parents in old age and yet does not come in Paradise by helping them friendly and by according them good action. Disobedience to father and mother is a main sin and the Allah Almighty may forgive every other sin He satisfies excluding disobedience to parents. Thus, we must serve our parents in all walks of life. On the great occasion of hajj, we see many people serving and helping their old parents. They also get reserved special Islamic Pilgrimage Tour coupled with advanced facilities.

Children are duty obliged to keep their parents in their old age and in case of default they would be enforced by the state to serve their parents. Islamic law of legacy makes the parents stockholder in the estate left by their dead child. Amongst the parents, place of mother in respect of obedience and kind treatment from children has been made advanced than that of father. The Holy Quran particularly underscores the services of a mother concerning the troubles of pregnancy and her hardships regarding bringing up of the children.
